*TONIGHT: Friday, November 15th at 8 PM *
Pearson-Hall Theatre in the Lang Performing Arts Center on the Swarthmore
College campus (Media-Elwyn Line, Swarthmore Stop)

The Varone company will perform Lux (2006). The Washington Post describes
Lux as, “Luxuriant. Lux is all about freedom. It is what dancing really
feels like, the kind of dancing I might dream about: loose and sweeping in
a spirit of exultation. Varone puts the beating heart at the center of his
work. Beginning with Varone’s meditative, resilient exploration of the
space around him, Lux seems to progress toward optimism, as a projected
moon slowly rises on the backdrop, and the performers take pleasure in
their richly convivial celebration. Lux sates you with dancing, but you’re
still reluctant to leave the feast.”

The students will join the company for Mass*, from their celebrated work in
the shelter of the fold (2016). According to a recent review of the work
from Broadway World, “Doug Varone and Dancers’ in the shelter of the fold
is a transcendent and transfixing inquiry into public and private
relationships to faith through seven vignettes that intermingled fluidly.
The evening was as sonically spellbinding as it was visually enchanting
thanks to the complex, varied and at times otherworldly or ethereal sounds
provided a diverse array of multiple compositions played by Bang on a Can
All-Stars with PUBLIQuartet and Lesley Flanigan…It would be nearly
impossible not to walk away without feeling inspired, uplifted and moved on
a deeper spiritual level.”

The William J. Cooper Foundation provides a varied program of lectures,
performances and exhibitions which enriches the academic work of Swarthmore
College. The Foundation was established by William J. Cooper who specified
that the income from his gift should be used "in bringing to the college
eminent citizens of this and other countries who are leaders in
statesmanship, education, the arts, sciences, learned professions and
business." Planning for next season is currently underway.
