*This class *will focus on fundamental skills and principles and is
appropriate for both beginners and more advanced dancers. Loren will lead a
class sharing the key principles of the form: sharing weight and
kinesthetic listening through both concrete movement skills and more open
ended explorations of principles. This class is a great way to learn safe
ways to partner with each other for more dynamic CI dances. Due to the
improvisatory nature of the form, our interactions don’t always go as
planned, so we will practice embracing the unexpected with safety, respect,
curiosity, and delight. This class will focus on self and other-balancing
our own desires while responding to others. Loren may include ideas from
her recent durational and semi-composed performance "In the Light" as
applied to CI to consider how empathizing with others and sensing their
natural rhythms can be inspiring for our own passion and persistence, but
simultaneously not over extending ourselves, but rather using reseliency,
awareness, and adaptability to maintain sustainable dancing.

*Loren Groenendaal* is a Philadelphia-based dance artist and educator,
specializing in contact improvisation (CI), contemporary/modern dance,
Balinese dance, the Laban/Bartenieff Movement System (LBMS), and creative
dance. In addition to dancing CI for 16 years, Loren has been teaching CI
since 2009 to adults in the communities of Philadelphia, Boston, and
Baltimore as well as a guest at Arcadia University, Juniata College, Towson
University, University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). She has been
improvising her entire life, but her formal studies in contact
improvisation began at Oberlin College with Ann Cooper Albright in the very
same room where Steve Paxton developed "Magnesium" which is considered to
be the seminal work of contact improvisation. She holds an MFA in
Choreography from the UNCG, where she continued her CI studies with John
Gamble. She has also studied with Nancy Stark Smith several times in
various intensives, deepening her studies of CI, The Underscore, and States
of Grace. Loren is a Certified Movement Analyst from the Laban/Bartenieff
Institute of Movement Studies, which informs her practice of teaching CI
with understanding the macro principles of the form and micro coordinations
for successful movement. Loren is the artistic director of contemporary
dance company, Vervet Dance, through which she choreographed and directed
many dances, including some based in contact improvisation. She also dances
with Swarthmore College's Balinese Gamelan Semara Santi, Katherine Kiefer
Stark's The Naked Stark, a release based contemporary dance company, Jenny
Sawyer's From the Earth Dance Project for site specific, nature inspired
dance, and Graffito Works, a site-specific improvisational ensemble. She is
a founding member of the Thursday CI Jam, monthly Underscore, Mascher Space
Co-op, and Impermanent Society of Philadelphia.
