Dance TAG (Teaching Artists Group), sponsored by Philadelphia Dance Projects, returns this Sunday, November 13 with a chance to enrich your teaching and artistic practice through a workshop on Rhythm and Movement Play. Dancer/choreographer Melissa Chisena and musician Jon Cannon will lead the charge. It's from 12:00 - 2:00 (note the change from the usual TAG time) at the Performance Garage, 1515 Brandywine Street and it's FREE! Further details below. RSVP to info at philadanceprojects.org.
Join in for a workshop on inspiring dancers with rhythm play and phrase building activities. Co-taught by Philadelphia-based dancer Melissa Chisena and multi-disciplinary musician Jonathan Cannon, the session will focus on finding rhythm, pulse, tempo, syncopation, and polyrhythms in movement. Dance teaching artists and choreographers will find material for a range of levels and ages, from non-dancer to advanced, as well as choreographic tools for creating dynamically-charged movement phrasing, using a variety of rhythm patterns.
Melissa Chisena is a teacher, dancer, choreographer, and producer in the Philadelphia area. She is the artistic director of Chisena Danza and has danced and toured with Richmond Ballet, North Carolina Dance Theatre, Jeanne Ruddy Dance, and Tania Isaac Dance, among others. She currently teaches ballet, modern, jazz, improvisation, and choreography at Temple University, Ursinus College, Philadelphia Dance Theatre, Dance Elite, and Janice's DanceWorks. Melissa curates and produces An Evening of Duets and The Philadelphia Youth Dance Fest.
Jonathan Cannon graduated with a Bachelors of Music from Virginia Commonwealth University. Currently living in Philadelphia, he works professionally as a bassist, guitarist and percussionist across the region. He works as a sound technician for The Kurtz Center at William Penn Charter High School and also at Cheltenham High School. His original compositions have been commissioned by various dance companies. He teaches a Music for Dance class at Philadelphia Dance Theatre and gives private lessons to young aspiring musicians.
Dance TAG is a collegial gathering of teaching artists for movement ideas, information, discussion, and networking. We invite artists at all stages of their teaching - rookies, veterans, people currently working or those looking for work, especially artists in schools and community situations - who consider teaching to be an integral part of their artistic work. The sessions tend to be very inspiring and relevant for artistic inquiry as well as teaching.
