Dancefusion, Philadelphia’s dynamic modern dance repertory companyunder the Artistic Direction of Gwendolyn Bye, will present MakingDance as part of the FringeArtsFestival, featuring three new works by Stephen Welsh, Masad Qawishabazz, andcompany member Kalila Kingsford Smith. Works will range from political satireto pure physical movement. Our program also features Jennifer Yackel in thereconstruction of Mary Wigman’s historic solo from 1926, “Hexentanz.”

Swing Vote marks the professionalreturn of Philadelphiachoreographer Stephen Welsh to the Fringe. With an original score composed by John Glauditz, thissatirical commentary draws parallels between the competitive nature ofchildhood games, such as Red Rover and Tug-o-War, and our current presidentialrace. Through highly physical phrases, quirky humor and combative dancing, thequestion arises: what if the two sides that form end in a tie?  MasadQawishabazz’s Articulated Reasoning, set to music of Vladislav Delay, is about the articulation of the body. Thebody's breath, sight, skin, how it folds and unfolds, and through all of thosethings, how we learn to understand the different ways our bodies articulateemotions without words. EverAngled, by Kalila Kingsford Smith, follows three women throughtheir friendship. As they become interdependent, they assume their individualstrength will be multiplied to the third power. How does their relationshipstray as one bond between friends becomes stronger than another? Set to musicby Franz Schubert, Ever Angled uncovers this dynamic as they vie for each other'sattention. Hexentanz (“WitchDance”) by Mary Wigman (1886–1973) will be performed by Philadelphia dance artist, Jennifer Yackel.Mary Wigman, a German dancer, choreographer, and proponent of GermanExpressionism, was hailed for bringing the deepest of existential experiencesto the stage and contributing a new aesthetic for dance. Her solo Hexentanz, created in 1926, was reconstructed by choreographer VictoriaHutchinson, and represents aformative work in the history of modern dance.
