Embodied Palestine Solidarity
<https://www.facebook.com/events/1126320004205581/> with Nicole Bindler
Saturday, May 4th, 7:00pm
Vox Populi, 319 N 11th St, 3rd Floor
Donations accepted at the door. No one turned away for lack of funds.
This lecture briefly covers the history of the formation of Palestinian and
Israeli folk dance forms as representations of national identity. Bindler
will present video documentation of Palestinian and Israeli folk dances,
plus the work of contemporary choreographers from the region. She will
discuss the conditions under which these artists live and make their work,
and how Brand Israel informs their funding, touring structures, and even
the content of their dances. This presentation is also informed by
Bindler's three year collaboration with Diyar Theater (Bethlehem,
Palestine). They recently completed a U.S. tour of their performance piece,
WOMEN, which is a hybrid folk/contemporary dance that contains stories and
images by and about women living under occupation. See Bindler's piece in
the Somatics Toolkit, Palestinian Dance and the Obfuscation of Somatic
for examples of the topics that will be covered in this talk.

Dancer, choreographer, teacher *Mari Osanai* has performed and taught in
Japan, Canada, USA, Greece and Germany. Her workshops focus on Noguchi
Taiso combined with the influences of her early training in Tai Chi,
western dance methods, traditional folk dance in Aomori, Japan (her
birthplace), and the connection between one's thoughts and sensation of
weight. Osanai's approach to movement research and exploration begins with
a heightened awareness of gravity's influence on the body and the body's
connection with the center of the earth.
Exercises in the workshop train the body to embrace its weight and heighten
its sensitivity to move from its most relaxed and receptive state. Starting
with images, such as washing the body with water, air, sunlight, workshop
participants will discover the body's vital energies rooted in its inherent
hydrodynamics. Movement and form result as participants ingest imagery
inside their bodies and allow the changes to shift the body's interior.
*id m theft able* performs within and without the realms of noise,
avant-improvisation, sound poetry, performance, et c. et c. et c. using
voice, found objects, electronics, and whatever else is available. He has
given hundreds of performances across 4 continents in settings ranging from
the scummiest of squats to the fanciest of festivals.
*Mutual Irradiation* is an interdisciplinary performance and lecture series
initiated by Jim Strong. Referencing a Quaker devotional text, Mutual
Irradiation refers to as an inner radiance which can be mutually drawn
between the listener and the one being listened to, in the pull of deep
conversation and sharing. A category of listening which in a social and
reciprocal context behaves like the connecting of a circuit, beginning a
transmission of radiance, intimacy, ideas, blueprints.
