Emory, who is approaching the end of a fruitful three year residency at
SHMD, developed this duet program after frequently creating duets for
herself and her dancer Meg Foley. These duets made her curious about how
other choreographers approach the format of a duet, and in hosting this
presentation of duets by New York and Philadelphia choreographers, she hopes
to open a dialogue between the two thriving dance-making cities who are so
supportive of independent works. Emory anticipates that this show will
encourages discussion about process and intent between choreographers, and
she believes that keeping informed about what kind of work is being made in
this time period, and how it is being made, is crucial to the growth of the
form.
Native Philadelphian Devynn Emory has become known for her quirky movement,
her elaborate costumes, and creation of extreme environments. Emory
graduated from Philadelphia's University of the Arts with a BFA. in
dance. After
graduation she went to Ghana, West Africa to dance with the Kunsun Ensemble.
She has been seen in works of the White Oak Dance Project, Paule Turner's
COURT, PIMA, Headlong Dance Theater, and Kate Watson-Wallace. Her work *
BEAST* was highly profiled at the 2007 Philadelphia Live Arts Festival. Emory
is a 2003 New Edge Mix recipient, 2006 Independence Foundation Fellowship
recipient, and resident choreographer at Susan Hess Modern Dance. Her work
has been seen in the Live Arts festival and at The Place in London, among
other locations. She is also a massage therapist and is currently exploring
her passion for dance film.
Since 1981, Susan Hess Modern Dance has helped select independent
