Father's Day Weekend launches the company's 22nd season of experimental
interdisciplinary works in Philadelphia. The program, choreographed by
Artistic director, Anne-Marie Mulgrew features three works; Salt, a
Philadelphia premiere, Tears of Joy, a playful romp incorporating six large
colorful exercise balls and excerpts from The Hidden River Project featuring
live music by "guitar virtuoso" Keith Calmes. The concert showcases some of
Philadelphia's finest dancers: Elrey Belmonti, Joseph Cicala, Lindsay
DeLooze, Frances Gremillion, Anne-Marie Mulgrew and Rebecca Patek.
Inspired by Mark Kurlansky's fascinating book, "Salt, a World History,"
SALT, an ensemble work, investigates sensations, memories and rituals
associated with salt, a vital component in the functioning of cells. The
stage set consists of a silver tub and pounds of salt to demarcate stage
areas. The choreography features eye-catching lifts, weighted drops and
suspensions. SALT is set to music by Elliott Sharp, Prem Joshua, Rick
Wakeman, Biddu Orchestra and Matt Haimovitz.
"Tears of Joy" examines the interplay between the human figure and an
everyday object (an inflatable exercise ball). Through a series of five
vignettes, dancers roll, collide, caress, toss, ride, float, squeeze and
interact creating powerful images that reflect basic human desires.
"The Hidden River Project," (excerpt) features original guitar music
performed live by Juilliard trained-guitarist Keith Calmes and dancer
Rebecca Patek. This excerpt is from a large-scale site-specific public work
created for the newly developed Schuylkill River Banks re-imagined for a
concert setting. Calmes views his music as "pads for Ms. Mulgrew's
choreography." Calmes and Mulgrew have collaborated on the acclaimed "Hans
Project" and "The Keith Suite."
AMM & DCO is supported in-part by Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Partners
Stream Program administered through GPCA, The Philadelphia Cultural Fund and
generous individuals.
