Ballet by Moonlight: Brandywine Ballet to Perform at Longwood Gardens
Lovely Open-Air Theater
WEST CHESTER, May 5 Following a closely-covered-in-the-media program
entitled Beyond the Steps, which pitted the jazzy, modern dance styling of
Ronen Koreshs eponymous piece against the classical elegance of George
Balanchines Serenade, the Brandywine Ballet announces a reprise
performance Saturday, May 30 2008, 7:00 pm at Longwood Gardens lovely
open-air theatre. Also on the program is Brandywine Ballet Mistress Nancy
Pages Danse Bacchanale.
In the May issue of the nationally distributed, New York City-based Dance
Magazine the Brandywine Ballets spring performance Beyond the Steps was
recognized for modernizing the companys traditionally balletic repertoire
and for challenging classically trained company dancers to meet their
technique and stylistic fears head on. They have learned to be
effortless, elegant and light, said choreographer Mr. Koresh. But its
important to also have an understanding of earthiness and physicality to
get down.
Lest ballet purists fret, George Balanchines Serenade is also on the
program. Ripe with historical overtones as it was Balanchines first
original work staged on American soil following his emigration from Russia
in the early part of the twentieth century, Serenade promises a
fascinating insiders look into the dynamics of the ballet studio and
Balanchines unique choreographic method.
The Brandywine Ballet was founded in 1978 by Artistic Director Donna
Muzio. The company of 45 apprenticed, professional and guest artists
boasts a repertoire of over 80 ballets including Concerto Barocco, Carmina
Burana, Dracula, Serenade, and the holiday favorite The Nutcracker.
Presenting a season of three performance series which runs fall through
spring at West Chester Universitys historic Emilie K Asplundh Concert
Hall in Phillips Memorial Hall, the company travels in the summer to
various alternative venues including Longwood Gardens, Rose Tree Park, and
the Ocean City Music Pier, among others.
