FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The nation's best size-diverse dance and performance company graces
The Rotunda for two shows on one day only!
PHILADELPHIA - On Saturday, April 26, 2008, the Boston chapter of Big
Moves will delight audiences of all ages with BIG TOP, a new
circus-themed dance and performance revue with dancers of all sizes.
How much fun, dazzle, music and lights can fit into The Rotunda?
Big Moves, the nation's best size-diverse dance and performance
company, is going to find out with two eye-popping performances.
Big Top is coming to Philadelphia for two shows only on Saturday,
April 26, at The Rotunda (4014 Walnut Street).
Shows are at 2pm and 8pm, with doors opening a half-hour beforehand.
General admission is $12 in advance (available at
http://BigMoves.org <http://bigmoves.org/>), or $15 at the door. PARENTS:
children 12 and
under get in for only $5! Bring your children to an event that will
challenge notions of body image and size in the performing arts.
Big Top features Big Moves at its carnivalesque best, with jazz dance,
bellydance, musical theater, and even some bhangra-styled hip hop.
They have also added clowning, aerial dance, feats of strength and
dexterity, and live musical variety acts. All of this is framed by a
touching pantomime of two young lovers whose lives are torn asunder by
the winds of fate and the whirl of the circus and life on the road.
At The Rotunda, Big Top audiences will get the full circus experience.
We've got candy girls, hawkers, and service with a smile, plus
popcorn, peanuts, the sideshow with a fortune teller, "Not-So-Little
Egypt" bellydancers, and games that dare you to defy the odds.
About Big Moves
Big Moves is dedicated to creating high-quality, multi-genre dance
productions featuring performers of all sizes.
Because performance dance in the Western tradition has historically
been restricted to thin bodies, Big Moves is particularly focused on
providing training and performance opportunities for dancers who are
larger than dance world norms. Outreach and education programs promote
self-acceptance and self-love for all dancers, of any size and all
skill levels, as they work toward growing and fine-tuning their range
of abilities, technique, and expression through movement. Ultimately,
these explorations are directed at nothing less than a paradigm shift,
toward a society in which size diversity is celebrated, not feared.
Big Moves was founded in 2000 by Marina Wolf Ahmad, a plus-size dancer
who wanted to create community, training opportunities, and
performances for herself and other dancers who otherwise were left out
of the dance mainstream. The organization began operations in the San
Francisco Bay Area, and expanded to Boston in January 2005, and to New
York in May of 2006. These three areas have their own branches of Big
Moves, and Boston additionally is the home base for a touring company
that reaches to Montreal, Philadelphia, Washington DC, as well as
other locations along the East Coast.
Additional support for the Philadelphia appearance of Big Moves has
been generously donated by the Women's Center and the Office of Health
Education, both at the University of Pennsylvania.
