In Physiognomy of the Spirit , choreographer Brigitta
Herrmann reintroduces the concept of a dance/movement
choir, with an intergenerational group ranging from
teen- to senior age. Investigating layers of
consciousness, each section portrays aspects of a
shift in perception between the internal/ external
worlds, utilizing choreography and structured
improvisation in juxtaposition with text/voice/music,
along with video by Peter Price. This concept of a
dance choir, as an entity of group consciousness was
explored and favored by Mary Wigman, Expressionist
dance pioneer, and Herrmanns teacher/mentor. The
piece explores images of relationship, reflecting on
our interconnectedness with the planet and one another
through solo, duet, and group forms.
Participating dancers include: Kristin Narcowich,
Rebecca Patek, Josie Smith, Zornitsa Stoyanova, Emily
Sweeney, Sheila Zagar, and Group Motion Workshop
community dancers: Kathie Brown, Elizabeth Finestone,
Vickie Seitchick, Nina Sherak, & Suzanne Wright.
Physiognomy of the Spirit is inspired by the
predicament of the human psyche as understood through
the research and literature of Caroline Myss
(author-pioneer in the field of energy medicine and
human consciousness).
Physiognomy of the Spirit is supported in part by
Dance Advance, a program of the Philadelphia Center
for Arts and Heritage, funded by The Pew Charitable
Trusts and administered by the University of the Arts.
