First Friday Juerga with Pasion y Arte and very special guests Roksonaki! 

The unique component in Pasión y Arte's juergas is that the invitation to 
participate is open to all genres of music, singing, dance, and spoken word. The 
goal is to create new flamenco languages from different traditions. Special 
guest musicians and dancers - both professional flamencos, students, 
aficionados, artists from other Latino and non-Latino traditions - are invited to each 
juerga! 
We are so very fortunate to have with us this upcoming Juerga,  
Roksonaki-Kazakhstan's most experimental neotraditionalist musical group – currently on a 
eight-city tour of the US!!!   They will  be stopping at the  juerga on Friday, 
April 4 to share their unique music with Philadelphia!

A smash hit at the 2002 Smithsonian Folklife Festival, Roksonaki pioneered 
the creation of a unique sound that integrates ancient Kazakh instrumentation 
with contemporary rock and jazz using motifs drawn from Eurasia's indigenous 
religious traditions. Roksonaki was formed in Almaty, Kazakhstan in 1990 by 
Ruslan Kara. The current lineup includes three talented, versatile musicians. 
Ruslan plays the acoustic guitar, bubin or frame drum, shankobyz or jaw harp, other 
traditional instruments, and throat sings. Yerlan Sabitov plays the kylkobyz 
or spike fiddle and the dombra - the two-stringed Kazakh lute. Galymzhan 
Sekeyev, Roksonaki's youngest member (and heartthrob) plays the jetigen or zither, 
shankobyz, dombra, bubin, sazsyrnai - Kazakh flute - and also throat sings.
