*paraphrase/NEXUS* is a monthly series in which artists of various
disciplines and media create performances that respond and relate to current
exhibitions at NEXUS Gallery.
On Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at 8pm, paraphrase/NEXUS will feature
singer/songwriter Bianka Brunson of Lillie Ruth Bussey, theater artist
Kathryn TeBordo, and dancer/choreographer Jaamil Kosoko. All performers will
explore the work of J. Makary, Leah Reynolds, and Blaine Siegel, three new
NEXUS members working in performance, video, sculpture, installation and
drawing.
The performance is free, and takes place at NEXUS/foundation for today's art
in the Crane Arts Building, 1400 N American Street, Suite 102 in
Philadelphia.***
The performing artists:*
Lillie Ruth Bussey is *Bianka Allyon Brunson* when she plays a mean guitar
and sings her songs. Listen to her at www.myspace.com/lillieruthbussey. ***
Kathryn TeBordo *is a choreographer and performer, and artistic director of
Workshop for Potential Movement, a Philadelphia based performance company
that creates new collisions of dance and theater.
Interdisciplinary movement-based artist *Jaamil Olawale Kosoko *creates
performances that draw from both visual and literary aesthetics, allowing
poetry and video-art to inform how he renders his ideas and concepts into
dance. http://www.kosokoperformance.org/*
The visual artists:**
J. Makary's* projects are like an introduction—getting dance to meet cinema,
getting performance to meet digital effects—and she is mostly concerned with
guiding these elements to a topic and having them connect through
conversation. *Leah Reynolds*' installation, "Tidal", was made specifically
for the NEXUS gallery space, and explores color, light, pattern, buoyancy
and weight. The drawings and sculpture in *Blaine Siegel's* recent work are
influenced by the Mughal sixteenth century illustrated manuscript, *The Book
of War*. The new members show at NEXUS runs through Friday, March 7.
*Upcoming installments:*
On Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at 8pm, paraphrase/NEXUS will feature work by
members of the map dance collective: Ashley Anderson, Jung-eun Kim (aka je),
and Danielle Paloumpis. They will explore the exhibition "8 Artists - 8
Viewpoints: Recent Fiber Grads from Philadelphia."
The one-year anniversary (!) installment of paraphrase/NEXUS will be
Wednesday, April 23 and will feature dancer/choreographers Jil Stifel and
Zornitsa Stoyanova and composer/musician Mikronesia exploring the
photography of NEXUS members Susan Abrams and Tasha Doremus.
